GOT the Beat is the first female Kpop supergroup, and it is made up of some of the all-time Kpop greats. GOT stands for Girls on Top and is the first group to come out of the Girls on Top project. SM Entertainment made headlines for their male Kpop supergroup Super M (Taemin, Baekhyun, Kai, Taeyong, Mark, Ten, and Lucas) a few years ago. They took things to a new level with Girls On Top in 2022. The 7-member group made its debut live on New Year’s Day via an online concert called SMTOWN LIVE 2022.
Why GOT the Beat Failed
Many felt GOT the Beat would have their comeback at some point in 2024. However, nothing has happened up to this point and it doesn’t seem likely GOT the Beat will be getting together again anytime soon. So what happened? It is difficult for the supergroup to continue as many have their group and the time it takes to come together would be difficult. This is why they had so much trouble doing promotions (interviews and Korean variety shows). In addition, GOT the Beat didn’t have a major hit song. Honestly, can you name one you would consider an all-time classic? GOT the Beat should be seen as a great one-time gathering and if it was to happen again it would probably involve a new supergroup with new members.
When looking at GOT the Beat, each member is a superstar and has proven they are hall-of-fame level K-pop idols. If they released solo albums or made comebacks with their group, they would have outperformed GOT the Beat. This is because each group has their own fans. Do you really think Red Velvet members and their fans liked Seulgi and Wendy taking time off for GOT the Beat?
GOT the beat – A new female Kpop supergroup is comprised of:
BoA
BoA is one of the most successful and influential Kpop female singers. She has been called the Queen of Kpop. She has released over 20 studio albums. BoA can sing in Korean, English, Mandarin, and Japanese. Furthermore, BoA is known for being the first Korean Kpop star to break into the Japanese market.
Taeyeon (Girl’s Generation)
Taeyeon made her Kpop debut as a member of Girl’s Generation, one of the biggest Kpop Girl Groups of all time. In addition, she made her solo debut in 2015 and since then has sold over 1.5 million physical albums and 22 million digital singles as of 2024.
Hyoyeon (Girl’s Generation)
Another member who made her Kpop debut with Girl’s Generation is Hyoyeon. She went solo in 2016. In 2018, Hyoyeon returned as DJ Hyo with a single called Sober. Furthermore, she has been DJing at Korean clubs and EDM festivals under DJ Hyo.
Seulgi (Red Velvet)
Seulgi is a member of the Kpop girl group Red Velvet and its sub-unit Red Velvet – Irene & Seulgi. She is also known for her fashion sense. Moreover, her influence has led to the rise of minimalist fashion trends among Koreans in their 20s and 30s.
Wendy (Red Velvet)
Wendy is another member of Red Velvet to join GOT. She made her solo debut in 2021 after recovering from an accident on stage where she fell 2.5 meters.
Karina (Aespa)
Karina is the leader of the Kpop girl group Aespa. She also went viral for performing alongside Kai for the virtual showcase held by Hyundai Motors.
Winter (Aespa)
Winter is also a member of Aespa. She was the first member to be revealed for Aespa. Moreover, she is very familiar with BoA as she performed BoA’s debut song ID: Peace B, for BoA’s 20-year career tribute at the 2020 Mnet Asian Music Awards.
GOT the Beat Comeback in 2024?
This is unlikely. While many in the group remain close, their schedules are just too jam packed. Karina and Winter have expressed how much fun they had learning from more experienced idols. Their popularity for sure grew and they benefited the most for being a part of such a supergroup. However, even for them, being apart from their existing group would be an issue. SM Entertainment have never been known for their scheduling.
However, this does not mean another supergroup might not come out in 2024. This was originally the concept when GOT the Beat was created. There were plans for multiple GOT units. However, since GOT the Beat did not have the success that SM Entertainment envisioned. It is highly unlikely they will continue to form these supergroups in the future.
